Academic tightening
Cut academic wordiness while preserving technical meaning and data.
Edit the supplied academic passage to reduce wordiness while preserving its scholarly tone, structure, and rigor. Find redundant phrases, repeated claims, and needlessly complex sentences. Replace them with shorter, grammatically correct alternatives. Keep technical content, data, equations, citations, and terminology unchanged. Preserve the distinction between observation, interpretation, and speculation. Do not strengthen a claim, remove a limitation, or turn correlation into causation to save words. Return the revised passage, then up to three brief examples of useful changes in the form "original → revision." Prefer changes that the writer can reuse elsewhere. If the user requests only the revision, omit the examples. Check that every substantive claim and qualification survives.

Fictional observational building-energy study; includes reusable edit notes

It is important to note that, in the sample consisting of 64 municipal buildings, buildings with external shading had 12% lower mean summer electricity use than buildings without shading (Park et al., 2024). This observation is consistent with the possibility that external shading reduces cooling demand. However, because the study was observational in its design and did not record differences in cooling equipment, it is not possible to establish a causal effect. The findings should therefore not be interpreted as an estimate of savings for an individual building.

In the sample of 64 municipal buildings, buildings with external shading had 12% lower mean summer electricity use than buildings without shading (Park et al., 2024). This observation suggests that external shading may reduce cooling demand. However, the observational design and unrecorded differences in cooling equipment prevent causal conclusions. The findings do not estimate savings for individual buildings. “sample consisting of” → “sample of” “observational in its design” → “observational design”
Examples illustrate the method. They do not measure model output.
